LeverageCard.com Celebrates College Hoops With Huge Giveaways

We announced today that beginning this week active LeverageCard.com users will become eligible to win free gift cards of increasing value following each round of this month's men's college basketball tournament.

Users are entered into the sweepstakes by registering on LeverageCard.com, where they will receive an additional five entries by completing their profiles or referring a friend. All users receive an additional entry each time they register a new gift card or loyalty program, enter to swap a gift card or open an offer in their 'Offers and Savings Inbox.' Furthermore, each user will be re-entered into the contest following every round -- so the more active a user is on the site, the more chances they have to win.

Now through April 7th, Leverage will be randomly drawing winners following each round of the tournament. The prizes for each round are:

Round One Thirty-two $10 cards
Round Two Sixteen $25 cards
Round Three Eight $50 cards
Round Four Four $100 cards
Championship Two $250 cards
Winner One $500 card

This simple promotion began today and ends following the final game on April 7th.

Remember – you need to be in it to win it!

Ever seen an entrepreneurial end-run?

Earlier this month, consumers got a reality check about the risks of gift cards. It happened after Sharper Image filed for bankruptcy and temporarily suspended acceptance of the cards. That set off a plastic panic among consumers who realized that the $26.3 billion spent on cards during the holidays wasn’t necessarily the safest bet.

But gift cards already have plenty of drawbacks from fees to expiration dates, which help pad retailers’ bottom lines. A backlash has been brewing: Massachusetts recently passed a law to cut back some fees. And certain parts of Canada are moving to get rid of expiration dates.

In the U.S., an upstart company called Leverage Inc., which enables consumers to buy, sell and swap cards online as well as track their balances and earn interest, is attempting an entrepreneurial end-run. The company recently launched a bankruptcy insurance policy that keeps cards from becoming worthless when retailers are in trouble. The site will allow customers holding gift cards purchased via leveragecard.com from merchants filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to transfer the remaining, unredeemable balances to gift cards from other retailers participating with the site the site.
